FIDE Rule of 400 Points
FIDE Handbook. A difference in rating of more than 400 points shall be counted for rating purposes as though it were a difference of 400 points.
• FIDE has been using the rule of 400 points since 1 July 2009.
• If you are rated 2200, and 2 your opponents 1000 each, the FIDE average of your opponents will be 1800, but not 1000 as expected.
• If you are rated 1800, and 2 your opponents 2400 each, the FIDE average of your opponents will be 2200, but not 2400 as expected.
• If you meet an opponent and your rating is higher than his or her by more than 400 points, your expected result for the game will be 0.92.
• If you encounter an opponent and your rating is less than his or her by more than 400 points, your expected result for the game will be 0.08.
• If the rating difference between you and your chess opponent is less than 400 points, this FIDE rule is not applied.
• From 1 April 2006 to 1 July 2009 FIDE had been using the old rule of 350 points, which is cancelled now. | Home
